NLP the difference that really does make the difference

By Sue Knight

New Labour Party? Never lower prices? A few years ago those would have been the quizzical responses that I would have expected when mentioning the term NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming). Not so today although you might still forgivably be in that category and if so then this article is designed to change your understanding. Organisations like Nationwide, Thomas Cook, PriceWaterhouseCoopers, Fujitsu, ICL, Barnardos, Oracle are amongst the many in the UK who have embraced the thinking and the principles of NLP. So just what is NLP and how does it make a difference at a personal and a business level? The chances are that even if you have come across NLP that either have a misunderstanding of what it is really about or you have only scratched the tip of the iceberg in terms of what is possible with this generic concept that could not be more relevant in our world of ever changing high tech business.

One of the principles of NLP (certainly in the way that I use it in business) is that it starts with oneself. The only person in the world that can change is oneself but given that we are integral parts of bigger systems then by changing oneself we move those systems of which we are a part whether they be our team, our family, our company, our market sector, our community or the world. Sound a bit far -fetched? Well one person who decided to commit to finding out for himself and for his personal and business life is Brian Chernett - the founder of the Academy for Chief Executives. This is an organisation that is dedicated to supporting leaders of business today to learn alongside other leaders and to work to make a difference in the world. Directly and indirectly Brian influences most of the leaders of the growing businesses in the UK economy. The example that he presents is paramount to his success. Brian is familiar with just about all the latest management development tools so he is in a good position to comment on what truly makes the difference with NLP.

What we see and hear is what we think about. What we think about is what we feel. What we feel influences our reactions. Our reactions become habits and habits influence our destiny.

Bob Gass

NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming) is a process of modelling excellence. It is a way of identifying the patterns and habits that both hinder and contribute to our success and failure. By developing this awareness of how our thinking patterns influence our destiny we develop choice - choice to continue to do more of the same or choice to do different and realise our deepest desires.
