Preparing your state for a presentation

Sue Knight

1.

Imagine the room where you will present and imagine your energy filling the room so that you have 'thought yourself' into every corner and every part of the room.

2.

Think of the last time that you presented in a similar situation in a way that you felt you were just the way that you wanted to be. Imagine you are back in that situation and see, hear and feel physically, (smell and taste) and feel emotionally what you were feeling then. Think of something that you can use to keep reminding yourself of this emotional state (an image that reminds you of that presentation, a word or phrase or a touch) and imagine yourself now bringing that 'right' feeling into this new presentation.

3.

Put any concerns you have about yourself to one side (you could imagine putting them down on the floor behind you) so that you put your attention completely outside yourself onto others.

4.

Imagine holding the belief that... 'It is self-indulgent to be self-conscious' and that however good your message it will be the best you can give if you put your self concerns to one side.

5.

Remind yourself of any purpose that you have (what benefits you want to bring to others by the work that you do)

6.

Put yourself in the shoes of your audience in terms of them wanting to hear you give of your best

7.

Connect with your audience individually if you can by shaking their hands and chatting to them as they arrive or by looking at as many of them individually and inviting them to connect with you by making eye contact.

8.

Breathe deeply and regularly and take your time

9.

Know how you want to start and have that start ready

10.

Enjoy yourself and know that you can only give of your best
