NLP Dominant — sian phillips — Saturday, July 26, 2003

Could you please give me some tips as too how to identify a persons dominant preference in the early stages of meeting them.

Thanks
Sian

Sue's Answer

Dear Sian, if you are referring to their filters in particular then their sensory filters you can pay attention to their physiology, their eye movements, their language. However I would stress that their preference might change and that is the value of NLP - rather than putting someone into a box in terms of a label you stay sensitive to what is true for you and them. However some clues for each sensory filter are:-

Visual

  • looking up or straight ahead in a defocussed way
  • rapid speech
  • breathing high in the chest
  • visual vocabulary such as look, see, picture. clear, focus

Auditor

  • looking sideways to their ears
  • head to one side
  • hands or fingers in telephone posture touching their ears and mouth
  • vocabulary such as hear, listen, tell, sounds, clicked, discuss

Feelings

  • looking down
  • resonant voice
  • expression of emotions
  • vocabulary such as hit me, gut instinct, feelings, touched, smooth, moving

You can find a comprehensive set of clues in most introductory NLP books

Hope that helps you achieve your goal.

Best wishes,

Sue Knight
