Noise Phobia — Trica — Tuesday, January 16, 2007

Hi Sue,

I suffer from phycotic depression, in the last year I have suffered with a noise phobia whithin my flat, my neighbour used to be very noisy but recently has quieten down, but now I suffer really bad anxiety and shakes when I go into the flat, I wear earplugs all the time and when I hear anything I start panicking, How can I get my self out of this?

Please help!
Tricia

Sue's Answer

Dear Tricia, well the noise may well be anchored to something beyond your conscious awareness in your past and that would be one way to deal with it but that might be easier if you were to have a one to one coach.. However what you might do is to find any time when you are less affected by the noise.. even if it is only a little less affected. And when you are in that state notice what is happening within you i.e. what are you thinking, seeing, hearing, feeling and how is that different to when you are more affected.. the attention that you are studying here is your own and not the noise. Whatever it is that you do that is true for the less affected state.. do more of it and notice what effect that has.. What you can also do is to think of what you would like to be feeling when you hear noise.. for example do you want to feel peaceful? But you choose the state that you want.. Once you have identified what it is that you do want to feel then think of a time when you had that quality.. no matter where or when that was.. it does not have to be associated with noise. Now imagine yourself back in that time when you had that state that you want to access in the future.. take time to pay attention to what it is like to be back imagining yourself in that state.. explore how you can anchor the state... i.e remember it maybe by associating it with a touch.. (you can read more about anchoring on the web if you want more information on that) so that you can access it when you choose. Now when you sense that you might be about to react to any noise...use that anchor to take you right back to the time when you had the quality that you want so that you can have it right now...

The main thing is to experiment with what makes a difference. And any choise is better than the internal ones that you have been making to date... I will be thinking about you..

Sincerely, Sue Knight
